  • Ohio Lease tenant addition question.

I live in Ohio and I am currently in a lease until September. My girlfriend and I have decided to move in together into my apartment. I mentioned this to my landlord and requested we have an addendum to my lease to include her and her son and they responded with she will need to apply and a new lease with higher rent will be applied. She passed the application, so we can move in together.
Since I am in a current lease can they make me sign a new one with higher rent? Also is there a limit on how much of a rent increase they can make?

I wasn't able to locate a search feature here so I apologize if this has been asked before.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, management can require that the old lease be terminated and a new one be drawn up with the new tenant (your girlfriend) signing it and both she and her son included on it as well as increased rent due to increased wear and tear to the rental unit with the additional number of people who will now be living there.

Unless you live in a rent controlled unit, there is likely to be no limit on how high they can raise the rent. It would be a good idea for you to ask how much higher the rent will be with these additional folks living there.
