Dear Sir or Madam,
I have a question that I am hoping I will get an answer from you. I rent an apartment in Minneapolisin April of 2005 and I have been living there since then. When my lease expired in April 2006, I forgot to sign the new lease and they did not let me know that I did not sign it until last week. However, I talked to someone from the management office about the new rent amount in April 2006 and started paying the new rent from May of 2006. Since I did not sign the lease, I decided to move out next month. However, the managent of the building told me that I am on a month to month lease now, and if I want to move out, I need to pay the difference of the market rent rate and the rent they were charging for the last 6 months and also have to give them 60 day notice. I would like to find out if I really need to give them 60 day notice even I have nothing signed and also need to pay the prior month differences between the market rate and the discounted rate? What can they legally do if I move out next month and refuse to pay the diffrence amount for prior months? Can I also get my deposit back? The only thing I signed was the lease renewal notification saying that I will renew my lease for the next 12 months, but I did not sign the lease. I will appericiate, if you can give me some legal advice? Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
