University of Southampton offering qualifying law degrees recognised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
The University of Southampton is a British public university located in the city of Southampton, England. The origins of the university can be dated back to the founding of the Hartley Institution in 1862 by Henry Robertson Hartley. In 1902 the Institution developed into the Hartley University College, with degrees were awarded by the University of London. On 29 April 1952, HM Queen Elizabeth II, granted a Royal Charter to give the University of Southampton full University status. This was the first Royal Charter granted by HM Queen Elizabeth II on her accession to the throne.
The university is a member of the Russell Group of research universities and the Worldwide Universities Network. It currently has over 17,000 undergraduate and 7,000 postgraduate students, making it the largest university by higher education students in the South East region. The main campus is located in the Highfield area of Southampton. Four other campuses are located throughout the city alongside the School of Art based in nearby Winchester.
The university has a strong emphasis on research, having one of the highest proportions of income derived from research activities in Britain. Southampton is highly regarded as a centre for educational excellence, ranking as a top 20 university in various tables, and regularly rated in the top 10 of the National Student Survey.

Research areas
All full-time members of academic staff are active researchers across a broad spectrum of legal subjects, in public, private, domestic and international law, and many are leading authors and experts in their respective fields.
We host a number of prestigious law centres, including the internationally renowned Institute of Maritime Law, which was founded in 1982 and is now the largest such research and teaching centre in the UK. We have an extremely active and innovative European Law research group, and a newly formed and progressive Health Ethics and Law research grouping. In addition, in 2006, the Institute for Law and the Web at Southampton (ILAWS) was founded as a unique interdisciplinary research and teaching centre, which combines legal expertise in key domains such as information technology law; e-commerce; IT law and public policy; and intellectual property law.
