    School of Law

I am delighted to be able to announce the launch of the new School of Law on 1st August 2008. We are a thriving, innovative, well regarded provider of legal education which produces confident and employable graduates and postgraduates. We have an established reputation as a thriving and innovative law group. Indeed, our undergraduate law provision has grown, in terms of breadth of curriculum provision and student demand, steadily and substantially from the launch of our first qualifying law degrees in 2002 and this growth has resulted in the creation of this School.

All our LLB degrees are accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board and you can choose between single honours law and law combined with Business, Criminology, European Studies, or International Relations. The postgraduate Law courses meet the needs of law and non-law graduates. The MA/LLM Corporate Governance and Commercial Law provides a dual qualification with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA). The LLM in Law provides an emphasis on business law and students have the opportunity to develop expertise in very practical and sought-after subjects through taught units and supervised research.

We intend to continue with the development of an innovative curriculum and are expanding the opportunities for students to learn from experience. We hope to provide placements with Havant CAB, Portsmouth Trading Standards, Portsmouth Mediation, Hampshire Police Special constables and Bid South in addition to our existing links with Portsmouth CAB and the Portsmouth Community Legal Advice Centre. We shall also continue to work with the local legal profession and expand our programme of mentoring and our law careers day. We will develop these links with an optional placement year and with our work with the Institute of Legal Executives. We have also formed a Law Employers Advisory Board. These contacts will enable to us to focus on strong career support and keep us informed of the issues of concern to employers.

We are committed to a research strategy that underpins our teaching and builds on the research interests of our law staff. This in turn ensures that we can give high quality support to our undergraduate and postgraduate students when they engage in their legal research. We intend to continue with our programme of offering law combined with other subjects and will work closely with the Forensics Forum within the University in order to provide exciting learning opportunities for our students.

We will be telling you what we are up to, what the interesting current legal issues are and what our graduates are doing with regular updates to our web pages. We would be pleased to answer any questions you have and would ask you to use the contact details set out on these pages. If you would like to visit us please arrange to do so through the University Preview Days or by special arrangement with our Admissions Tutors.
