    Northumbria University offer an 'exempting degree' in which the LPC or BVC is combined with the qualifying law degree into a 4 year course.

    We are a leading provider of the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) for non-law graduates looking to practise law and the Legal Practice Course (LPC) for those law graduates who are aspiring solicitors. We are also one of only 6 providers outside of London to provide the Bar Vocational Course (BVC) and we offer an unrivalled range of Masters programmes via a flexible distance learning mode of study, designed for busy professionals or those with family commitments. In addition, our 4 year Exempting Law Degree has run for over 10 years, incorporating the LPC or BVC, the professional stage of study.

    In September 2007 the Law School relocated to a futuristic ??£70m development in the heart of Newcastle, boasting state of the art teaching and learning facilities, with lecture theatres and workshop rooms equipped with the latest technology. In addition, there are specially designed courtrooms which are modelled on those that students will experience as qualified practitioners, a law practice library fully stocked with relevant text books and journals and student hub and social areas.

    The Law School is home to the Student Law Office, which is our groundbreaking legal service run by students. All Exempting Degree students and those LPC and BVC students selecting the Student Law Office as an elective, will be given the opportunity to work on real cases helping members of the public.

    Medical Law
    Postgraduate Diploma/LLM Distance Learning PG Diploma 18 months, LLM 2 years
    The programme enables participants to gain specialist knowledge within a practical context whilst enhancing research skills and developing expertise in a chosen field. The programme will be of interest to practising lawyers, doctors, other health care professionals, administrators and those with a general interest in Medical Law.

    Mental Health Law Policy and Practice
    Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/LLM Distance Learning PG Certificate 9 months, PG Diploma 18 months, LLM 2 years
    The LLM in Mental Health Law, Policy and Practice has been written and developed in close consultation with the Institute of Mental Health Act Practitioners (IMHAP) with the aim of providing in-depth training to IMHAP members and those who specifically work within the field of mental health administration. This innovative programme provides a unique opportunity for administrators, social workers, hospital nursing staff and other health care personnel who are involved in the field of mental health to gain either a Diploma or Masters degree whilst still pursuing their careers.

    Commercial Law

    The LLM/Diploma in Commercial Law is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge of a range of commercial law subjects and as such the programme will interest students who wish to enhance their qualifications in this dynamic area.     Graduate Diploma in Law / Common Professional Examination GDL/CPE
    Graduate Diploma Full Time 1 year full-time
    The Graduate Diploma in Law/Common Professional Examination provides the academic stage of legal education for non-law graduates who intend to become solicitors or barristers. On successful completion of this course students are then qualified to proceed to the vocational stage of training, the Legal Practice Course or Bar Vocational Course, both of which are also available at Northumbria.

    International Trade Law
    Postgraduate Diploma/LLM Full Time 1 year
    This postgraduate programme provides students with an in-depth understanding of the legal issues involved in international trade and will provide students with a reputable qualification in this exciting area of study. Students on the programme gain specialist legal knowledge within a practical context, whilst developing expertise in chosen areas and enhancing research skills.

    International Commercial Law
    LLM Full Time 1 year
    The LLM/Diploma in International Commercial Law offers students the opportunity to study a variety of commercial law subjects in an international context. The programme is designed for those who have studied law before or who have studied law within the context of a related discipline such as business studies.

    Mental Health Law
    Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/LLM Distance Learning PG Cert 9 months, PG Dip 18 months, LLM 2 years
    The programme will be of interest to practising lawyers, psychiatrists, social workers, hospital administrators and those with a general interest in Mental Health Law. It explores and develops key areas of Mental Health Law, including community care, rights and duties under the Mental Health Act and related legislation, the rights of the mentally incapacitated child and elderly client.

    Child Law

    The LLM in Child Law was created in recognition of the fact that those working with children, or who have an interest in this area of the law, need to have an understanding of legal issues relating to children across a range of different legal areas and disciplines.     This programme, developed in conjunction with the Department for Constitutional Affairs, is the UK's first postgraduate programme designed specifically for professionals in this complex and increasingly important area. It recognises the importance of records management and information handling and aims to provide a structured framework within which practitioners can acquire and update knowledge while gaining a qualification that recognises their specialist expertise.

    Advanced Commercial Property Law
    Postgraduate Diploma/LLM Distance Learning PG Diploma 18 months, LLM 2 years distance learning
    The Advanced Commercial Property Law programme was designed with the busy property professional in mind. It enables students to gain a postgraduate qualification with direct relevance to their career. The programme combines a practical approach with an in-depth study of commercial property law and the options allow students to pursue their particular interests and professional needs with the flexibility of distance learning study.

    Advanced Legal Practice
    LLM Distance Learning 18 months distance learning
    This programme is designed to promote the acquisition of legal knowledge in a practical context, and will be of interest to both solicitors and barristers. The programme will also interest postgraduate students who have completed the Law Society or Bar Council postgraduate vocational training programmes but have not as yet entered practice and wish to improve their employment prospects.

    Bar Vocational Course (BVC)
    Part Time 2 years part-time
    The Bar Vocational Course comprises knowledge areas and legal skills. The legal knowledge areas of the programme are Criminal Litigation, Civil Litigation and Evidence. The emphasis of the programme is on developing the five main skills used by practising barristers namely: advocacy, drafting, opinion writing, negotiation and conference skills. The University's Bar Vocational Course is approved by the Bar Council, and is the vocational stage of training for students who wish to enter pupillage in order to qualify as a barrister.

    Bar Vocational Course (BVC)
    Full Time 1 year full-time

    Criminology brings together disciplines such as sociology, economics, politics and history. Students study theoretical approaches and the ways in which criminological research is undertaken. Further, they address debates about policies and practices designed to deal with 'the problem of crime' as well as issues relating to crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour.

    Criminology and Forensic Science BSc (Hons)
    Full Time 3 years full-time
    This course combines the disciplines of criminology and forensic science to provide an insight into the study of crime and response to crime with the practical and theoretical aspects of forensic science investigation.

    Criminology and Sociology BSc (Hons)
    Full Time 3 years full-time
    This degree aims to provide a sound knowledge of sociological approaches to the study of society. Why do people commit crimes and how does society deal with criminal activity? What is criminal in the first place? This combined degree places crime in its social context and uses sociological analysis to help us understand and analyse crime and criminals and what we do about them. Students are encouraged to think about the changing nature of society and research methods, the nature and dimensions of inequality and global issues in the contemporary world.

    Graduate Diploma in Law/Common Professional Examination (GDL/CPE)
    Graduate Diploma Distance Learning 2 years distance learning
    The Graduate Diploma in Law/Common Professional Examination provides the academic stage of legal education for non-law graduates who intend to become solicitors or barristers. On successful completion of this course students are then qualified to proceed to the vocational stage of training, the Legal Practice Course or Bar Vocational Course, both of which are also available at Northumbria.

    Legal Practice Course (LPC)
    Part Time 2 years
    This programme satisfies the Law Society's requirement for those wishing to enter into a training contract to qualify as a solicitor. The programme includes a large amount of substantive law as well as providing training in the skills of drafting, advocacy, research and interviewing. This programme is an integral part of the vocational training of intended solicitors. It aims to prepare students for entry into a training contract with a solicitor.

    Legal Practice Course (LPC)
    Full Time 1 year
    The Legal Practice Course (LPC) is the required training for all students who wish to qualify as solicitors. The programme provides vocational training across a range of subjects and practical skills, enabling students to learn how to apply their legal knowledge in a practical context. In April 2007, the LPC at Northumbria was awarded the highest possible rating in all areas of assessment by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

    LLB (Hons)
    LLB (Hons) Part Time 4 to 6 years
    Designed to give students an understanding of the operation of the English legal system, the diverse areas of law contained within that system and the methods employed by lawyers in using legal source materials. This route provides students with a qualifying degree that gives exemption from the academic stage of training to become a solicitor or barrister.

    LLB (Hons) / LLB (Hons) Solicitors Exempting / LLB (Hons) Barristers Exempting
    LLB (Hons) Full Time 3 years or 4 years full-time
    This course offers the choice of studying for three years to obtain an LLB (Hons) qualifying degree or four years to achieve either a Solicitors Exempting degree or an Exempting Bar Vocational award. The course builds on the School of Law's reputation for innovative teaching, in particular on its philosophy of combining academic development with practice experience. Students are given the opportunity to advise real clients in the School's Student Law Office gaining hands-on experience and the skills required in an increasingly competitive environment.

    LLB (Hons) Open Learning
    LLB (Hons) Distance Learning 4 to 6 years
    This course is designed to give students an understanding of the operation of the English legal system, the diverse areas of law contained within that system and the methods employed by lawyers in using legal source materials. This open learning degree is ideal for those students who are unable to attend the institution regularly for tuition.

    LLB CPE Conversion
    Distance Learning One year
    Students successfully completing the GDL/CPE Programme are eligible to convert their Diploma to an LLB Honours Degree. This one year Conversion Programme comprises the study of two additional legal subjects and the submission of a project of 10,000-15,000 words on a legal area chosen by the student.
