    Department of Law and Criminology

Why study at Edge Hill University?

Edge Hill was voted the top North West University for Law in the 2008 National Student Survey.

Qualifying Law degrees enable you to study all the key legal principles, doctrines and legal institutions that constitute the foundations of legal knowledge in England and Wales.

Criminology programmes explore the causes and contexts for crime, deviance and disorder in society, exploring the background to, and recent developments in criminology, social justice and human rights.

Our active research community has staff at the forefront of teaching, research and publication in law, criminology, human rights and social justice.

    The Department

We offer an approachable, supportive and understanding environment in which to study Law and Criminology. Our innovative, career-focused courses are underpinned by a strong commitment to student participation, designed to help you achieve your full potential.

The department is primarily based in the modern Management Centre, situated at the heart of the Western Campus in Ormskirk, overlooking the university's lake and piazza area and boasting excellent facilities.

Information Technology is used extensively in the delivery of our programmes and this, combined with work placements and career planning, ensures you graduate equipped with the knowledge, confidence and appropriate skills to embark on your chosen career.

In 2008, final year Law students rated the programme as the best in the North West and in the top ten nationally in the National Student Survey, an initiative by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Members of the Department are at the forefront of teaching, research and publication in law, criminology, human rights and social justice. Students also have access to a comprehensive collection of legal and criminology study materials in both online and printed form, to enable you to pursue well-planned and well-delivered modules.

We're confident that whatever your chosen pathway or programme, you'll find studying in the Department of Law and Criminology a challenging, stimulating and rewarding experience.

    Studying Abroad

We welcome international students from all backgrounds to join our 3 year honours degree programmes, one year postgraduate programmes, as well as offering study abroad programmes to students from other countries.

Studying in a foreign country is a life changing opportunity, offering interesting challenges. Our extensive support for international students helps to ensure that you are able to greet those challenges positively, enhancing your life experience.

Edge Hill University has a relatively small number of international students which means you will receive a special welcome and an authentic British university experience.

We recognise that travelling overseas alone can be a daunting experience so the International Office will reserve your accommodation on campus, arrange collection from Manchester Airport and meet you on campus to help you settle in.

Once you are on campus, we can assist with any issues, such as visa enquiries or even simply planning trips to elsewhere in the UK or abroad.

    A Unique University Experience

Based in 75 acres of spacious, landscaped grounds, our Ormskirk Campus combines original buildings and gardens from the 1930s with ?£80 million of modern resources and 25 acres of sporting leisure facilities.

Everything you could want is on one campus, from an impressive library and Learning Innovation Centre, with 24-hour computer and Internet access and wireless hotspots around the campus, to a gym, swimming pool and much more at Sporting Edge. There's also cafes, restaurants, shop, nightclub, the Rose Theatre and health centre.

Whatever your choice of course, you'll be using state-of-the-art facilities. Whether you're using our modern dance studio and rehearsal rooms in the Centre for Performing Arts, model classroom in the Faculty of Education, Sports Therapy clinic or digital animation studio, you'll be at the cutting edge of your subject.

Whenever you're not studying, there's always something to do around the campus, with plenty of activities organised by the Students' Union, and major cities like Liverpool and Manchester only a short distance away.
