Re: Southern California Institute of Law (California)
ACCREDITATION
The Southern California Institute of Law with campuses in Santa Barbara and Ventura is ACCREDITED by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California.
The programs and degrees offered by the Institute are approved by the Bureau for Private Post-Secondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE), which is the degree granting authority in California.
JURIS DOCTOR (J.D.)
The Institute offers a program of study leading to the Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) Degree.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN LAW (B.S.L.)
Both campuses offer a Bachelor of Science in Law (B.S.L) Degree for those students who have not received a baccalaureate before commencing their law studies.
The Bachelor of Science in Law Degree will be conferred on any student who has at least 60 semester/90 quarter credit units of substantive academic content in the areas of mathematics, social and natural sciences, history and the humanities with a GPA of generally 3.0 or better prior to enrollment as a law student and who thereafter successfully completes a minimum of 40 credit units in the law school program to make a total of 120 standard credit units.
Students with passing CLEP and LSAT scores and who successfully complete 60 credit units in the law school program may by 'special petition' apply to receive the B.S.L. degree.
PRE-LAW BACKGROUND
Qualification for admission to the Institute reflects the aim of the Institute to offer the broadest opportunity for a legal education consistent with academically sound standards. Accordingly, we seek applicants from a wide variety of educational and experiential backgrounds and evaluate all students on an individual basis. The Institute does not prescribe a definite pre-legal curriculum for any applicant; however, a broad general education is usually considered better preparation for the law than specialized areas of study.
Prospective students should strive to acquire the ability to communicate ideas succinctly and clearly, both verbally and in writing, to gain a critical understanding of human values and institutions, and to develop the ability to think creatively.
