Even a bona fide written contract, signed by employer and employee, might not prevent the cancellation of a promised move.

Comprehensive employment contracts often have a "force majeure" provision allowing the contract to be canceled in the event of a catastrophe beyond the parties' control.

They can also be written with an escape clause allowing the employer to cancel under a variety of circumstances.

That's why you must always thoroughly and carefully read and understand every word of a contract, and its potential consequences, before you sign it. And keep a copy of what you sign.
