  • Outside Employment (Mississippi)

I would like to know if my job can regulate my outside employment. I am a state law enforcement officer and work security on the side. Previously I got permission do that. Security at various places including bank, car lot, body guard, ect. Recently I was approached by a club owner to set up security in his bar. When this was brought my chiefs attention, I was told I could not work security in the club. Can they do this to me? If I refuse to give it up, can they fire me? Do I have any rights? The state is Mississippi. The outside activity does not in any way effect job performance. Without a doubt I do more any other officer in my area. I can verify that as well.

One other thing is there is no conflict of interest. I work for MDOT and do commercial vehicle safety inspections and drug interdiction. I am NOT a DUI officer.

They normally can regulate it, for image, safety and other reasons...but if you have a union rep, they could intervene for you--
