  • punished by employer for voting?

I do not know who else to ask or how to go about solving my problem. If this is not the source to speak with please direct me to the appropriate people. My problem is this; I exercised my right to vote this election, actually I voted on election day just yesterday. My employer allowed me two hours to vote on election day. As you may know, the lines at the poles were very long across the entire nation. I had from 7:00am until 9:00am to vote and be back to work. Due to long lines I was a half hour late back to work and didn't arrive until 9:30am. My boss immediately told me to leave the office and go home. I was docked a full days pay for exercising my right to vote. I couldn't just leave the line and not vote because I have been paying very close attention to all topics on the ballot this year. I feel it was unfair of my employer to send me home and dock my pay for the day just because I went to vote. No one can predict how long the lines will be on election day and I got through it as fast as possible. My question is what can I do? Is there any thing I can do to make my employer compensate me fort time lost at work? Is it not true that they have to allow me the time to vote? No matter how long it takes? I feel their reasoning for sending me home was unjustified and unconstitutional. Forcing someone to lose a whole days pay just for not meeting their time line by a mere half of an hour. I don't know what to do about this but I feel it would be wrong and against my better judgement to just let it go. If you could please help me on this matter, I would be very grateful. Or point me in the right direction as far as filing a complaint. Is there any way to be reimbursed by my employer, or would I have to go as far as filing a lawsuit? I contacted the EEOC and they said they could not help me but directed me to the USCCR. I have sent them an email but have not recieved a reply. I am also trying to get the information needed to file a grievance with the HR department of my employer.

Your senior managers will likely override that decision if you file a complaint with them. If not you could also consult with your nearest Department of Labor office and they may very well intervene and/or help further direct you.
If neither of those steps resolves it, let us know here or also contact WLD directly on the home page for legal assistance.
