  • Downloading music: Is it illegal to rip a Music CD to computer for personal use?

I read on the Internet that it is not illegal to rip a Music CD to one\'s computer for personal use as that CD would be already in the public domain. Is that right?

If ripping of music is illegal, how come Microsoft offers the Mediaplayer with the possibility to rip?

You cannot copy copyrighted music for yourself if you did not pay for it...

re: Downloading music: Is it illegal to rip a Music CD to computer for personal use?

I was told that if you've already purchased the CD, (assuming you have) you are allowed to rip the music from your CD onto your computer for yourself ONLY. Only when you share those songs and advertise them to people that haven't purchased the CD is when it becomes illegal file-sharing/hosting. So, you are allowed to rip them for yourself, and if you want to share them with your friends, then you have to get permission from the artist.
      Hope this helped.
