  • Laws on assisted living residences in Michigan

    Hi!

Do all assisted living residences legally need to be licensed in Michigan?
If not what is really the difference between the two?

    No not in MI.
Most new places are licensed but the older ones--and many very good ones--are grandfathered in and don't need any special license.
The staff of course, including nurses, therapists and others must be properly licensed.

Lots of the so-called unlicensed ones are just doing all the things that are needed anyway (like red electric plugs for emergencies), and getting licensed in some cases and in some not.

That's the case in many states because in the past they really didn't regulate assisted living too much. Nursing hones yes but not assisted living or basic senior apartments.
