Trustees at Furman University have approved the hiring of the school's next president. The trustees on Tuesday approved 56-year-old Rodney A. Smolla (SMOH'-lah) to become the 11th president of the private school of roughly 2,700 students in Greenville. Smolla comes to Furman from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., where he was dean of the law school. One of his children is a freshman at Furman.
