  • I brought no assets to the marriage. Do I have any rights here in South Carolina?

My husband and I married in Vegas in Jan. of '06 and my son and I moved from FL to SC to his home of 20 years. It has been a year of constant ups and downs. My husband has many issues with my 10 year old child and no longer wants to be his step-dad. He wants a divorce. I brought no assets to the marriage. My husband wanted me to only work with him in his home based business and to be a homemaker. I am currently seeking employment, however I only have a small amount of money and a car in his name at this time. I have nowhere to go to. My husband is also quite influential in our small town community and I am still pretty much considered an outsider. Do I have any rights here in South Carolina?

Yes--you will be entitled to rough half of all assets accumulated during the marriage--and likely some support for you to get started living apart and working.
