I recently went through a custody/parenting time/child support case, and I wasn't completely satisfied with my attorney. I am now 6 1/2 months pregnant by different father, and though the relationship seemed perfect, he became very physically and mentally abusive. I got out of the relationship, pressed charges (still pending), and got a PPO against him.
Honestly I'm hoping this guy just drops off the face of the earth. I'm a government employee, and make enough money to support the child on my own. The biological father has no job, no other children, and now has a history of domestic violence. The father of my other two children wants to adopt this child, even though we arent together.
My question: As stated before, I wasn't entirely satisfied with my attorney, who is now telling me that I should start the custody process with the new father now, during my pregnancy, while the aggrivated assault charges are going on. He is stating that I am very likely to receive sole legal and physical custody if I do so. Has anyone dealt with a case like this? What do you think my chances are?
Now, my first thought on this is, he knows of my issue, and wants to cash in on it. I dont want to take a chance on letting the father of this baby back into mine or the childs life, but I know if I let things go and end up in court in a year or two, I wont have as good of a case. I dont know if it matters, but I am located in Michigan.
Please give me some advice on this.
Thank you,
swarren
