A special agent of the FBI has called my mother today, but because her Englishs-speaking skills aren't very advanced, I spoke in her place. The agent has called from out of state (NJ specifically, while we reside in NY) wanting to schedule a meeting with my mother about a criminal investigation. He repeated twice that's she's not subject to this investigation (could someone clarify what that means?), but wouldn't give any specific details over the phone, which made me suspicious.
He basically asked me to call him back once I found out whether my mom could make a trip to New Jersey (which she can't due to a lack of car and license), which he would prefer, or if he would need to come here to NY, and available days and such. He also mentioned that if I/my mom failed to contact him within one or two weeks, he would have to issue a federal subpoena.
My question is, should we hire a lawyer for this meeting, and what is the risk of serious litigation against my mom? Since our financial situation isn't the greatest, hiring a lawyer isn't in our best interests unless one is absolutely necessary. Also, both my mom and I are U.S. citizens, though my father, whom my mom divorced last year, is only a permanent resident.
Any legal advice is welcome and appreciated. Thanks.
