Car towed then searched

My car was towed while i was a sleep about a week ago. When i asked the towing company why, they tell me it was a vehicle used in a crime. I later contact the police station and they tell me that no one is on the case yet and it will be assigned to a detective shortly, but thats it's being held for edvidence. THREE days later i finally get a call from a detective and she says that it was used in a graffiti crime and that she will be searching it in four days [because its her days off]. The thing is no one has shown me a search warrant or even told me what and where the crime took place. My car is also being charged a $33 fee for each day it is stored at the towing company.

My question is can they search my car in the towing yard without a warrant?
and was it legal for them to just tow my car? all my regstration and everything is fine.

please help and any advice is appreciated

You should object strongly at the police dept and they will often release it or cover fees etc.
