garnishment of wages question (check garnishing)

I have a friend who got sued over an old bill one he had when he was single he is now married with two kids and they are garnishing his check eash week well the question we have is there some kind of hardship he can file to keep them from taking so much out of his check? After they garnish his check he is having a hard time making the bills buying groceries and taking care of his daughters. Please let me know if there is something he can do.

They can take up to 25 percent or if multiple creditors exist up to 50 approx.--there is not much to do about it except negotiate it it down or declare bankruptcy--or threaten to do so
