  • Douglass Knight & Associates taking money but not from me!

I started paying off a debt due to a car accident a couple of years ago. Right now I have the debt down to about 7,500....I, for awhile, did not have an active bank account and was giving my roomate the cash to deposit in her account so I could pay over the phone. Recently I've obtained a bank account and have been paying from this bank account on the debt. The debt collector, made by their own admission, "a tiny human error" and took a bi-monthly payment of 100 dollars out of my roomates account, which I haven't used in about 6 months now. They accused me of fradulent behavior by telling me that I made it seem like her bank account was in fact my own. They have done nothing to right this "tiny human error" and I had to come up with the extra money to pay my roomate back. I was wondering if my roomate or I had any legal standing in this matter. Also I would like to know if I ask to reduce my monthly payment and they refuse then threaten to suspend my drivers liscence what if any leg I have to stand upon. Thanks for your help!

I also forgot to add that every time I used my roomate's account to make a payment my roomate had to be present and give her debit card information and authorization code to the operator..which they also denied!

      Hi,
Funny you should say that about your license being suspended. I just started a battle with DK about 2 weeks ago. Same thing happened they sent the letter stating that i needed to pay 3500.00 to them on behave of The hartford company. I called them and talked to Brandie Jones about the amount that they were wanting. I told her that their number was high and try to explain what was going on and how it got there. She did not care one bit and told me that they were going after me for the full amount. I ask for and sent a letter requesting the copy of the paperwork. She said "Fine" and that if we did not pay it or if a judgement was issued that she would suspend my license until it was paid. Nobody but your state license branch as the right to take your license. I want and filed a complaint with my State Att. Gen. on her threats. Good Luck

Actually, I had my license suspended in the state of Texas because I owed DKA's client about $4,800.00 and couldn't pay because I'm an unemployed student...Well, DKA contacted the Department of Motor Vehicles or Department of Public Safety and told them I was driving without insurance at the time of the accident...so my license has been suspended.

They CAN and WILL do it! Then, if you don't pay anything after about a year...they'll close the case and take you to "Litigation" which means they're taking you to court. I don't even wanna THINK about what they punish you with there! Don't let it get that far. I told them for now I have to pay $10.00 /mo. for two months...then I can pay $50.00/mo.

Once you pay at least the amount that their client had to pay for their deductible...you can get your license re-instated...you just have to keep paying monthly payments until you're done OR they'll have your license suspended again. Then at tax season time, I should be able to settle the amount, I was told.

I'll never take my license for granted again!

        Good Luck!

These guys aren't scamming. Subrogation is a legal battle, in which Insurance carries hire a third party company to collect their losses from 'tortfeasors', or at fault parties. By law, they have the right to suspend any license they want that hasn't taken care of their legal dues in an accident. If you drive without insurance, you CAN and will have your license taken away. Simple as that. And if you got a letter 4 years later, its because the insurance companies, who have their own Subrogation departments, couldn't locate where you were at the time of the accident to assess how to get you to pay for the damages. When you finally were found by the company who was hired by the insurance carries to locate you, they are paid a percentage to get you to pay for the Insurance carriers losses. They are fully within their legal right to find you, and get you to pay for the damages that you caused. Regardless of how long it takes them to find you.

The people saying they CAN suspend your license probably work for these people. THEY CANNOT DO IT... SCAMMING THEY ARE ONLY A COLLECTION AGENCY... USING A "GLORIFIED NAME" TO LOOK LIKE A LAW FIRM... DONT FALL FOR IT!!

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY BY FAR THE WORST COMPANY TO DEAL WITH!!!!! The subragation "specialist" is Extremely rude (Jaime Molina). He sent me several rude emails and when I asked him not to use my work email he said "It's too late, you gave it to me and now I will continue to use it". He emailed me and stated in the email that I have alot of issues. When I called the company directly to speak to a manager to make a complaint they said they would not transfer me until I had a legitimate complaint. I went to the BBB and I can't even make a complaint there because they are at a B- due to so many complaints. What should I do? Just continue to deal with this?

Re: Douglass Knight & Associates taking money but not from me!

I'm dealing with the same issue here. I had gotten into a car accident last June, so almost a year ago, and I did not have insurance on the car I was driving at the time, but the other lady had double coverage. I got a call from DKA a few months after that around fall time. They said I owed $14k and I had until the first of December or November to pay, I think it was Nov, and that if I didn't, they would slam me for the full amount and I wouldn't be able to make any payment plans or anything like that. I talked to my lawyer and he said they sounded like scammers. The person I spoke to was Brandi Jones and she was very rude, and said my license would be suspended if I did not pay. I emailed them asking for their license to collect debt in Wa, the itemized basis for the debt, and proof to suspend my license. I haven't gotten any replies from her at all. A little over a month later I received a letter saying I owed $147 thousand dollars! She called not long after and said something about my license. I went to my lawyer again, and he advised me to keep ignoring them, and that he's never heard of an insurance agency or anyone to come after someone so viciously (tenaciously is the word he used) and then we wrote a final letter saying that I have not received anything I have asked for, and that I was once again requesting everything I had stated previously, and that if they were to not answer my question, then further contact would be ignored. I also listed the dates I've sent my emails to them because she said I wasn't being cooperative. Along with that, I asked how the debt went from $14k to $147k. Once again, they haven't replied to my email and it's been over a week. I got a voicemail this morning from a different gentleman saying that I was being unresponsive and uncooperative and that if I didn't respond by 5pm today, with is in about 45 minutes, then they would overturn it to the DMV. My lawyer said once again to ignore them. I'm not sure what to do, I am a 19 year old college girl, my parents are retired so I support myself completely. I have to pay for everything from rent to my phone bill, to my groceries, to my insurance. There is no way I can afford to pay 14 thousand, or 147 thousand dollars worth of who knows what! They are the worst, and most rude people I have ever dealt with, who don't give a dang about you. All they care about is when you can pay them, and if not, they'll continue to harass the living daylights out of you. Not sure where to go from here. If my license does get suspended, is there a way I can go to court and overturn that? I have no way I can pay off anything.

She has the right to both initiate and put a stop to automatic withdrawals from collection agencies. All banks' policies regarding automatic withdrawals differ, but she can sometimes terminate an automatic withdrawal by contacting her bank and requesting that it no longer honor automatic payment requests from the collection agency. Keep your current and/or savings accounts with a bank that’s completely separate to the one you owe money to. Speak with an attorney.

Nope. They can't suspend your license. They're not a law firm, they're not even a licensed debt collector. They're just a bunch of *******s who try to bully you to get their cut. The most they can do is call up a DMV and tell them that you're driving without insurance or whatever. Once the DMV realizes they're full of it, that's the end of that. Not paying a ticket will get your license suspended. Not paying Douglas, Knight ad Associates might end up in a court case, but it's a civil matter.

This is happening to me too. She is constantly calling me telling me that I owe almost 2k which I also don't have because I am a student who does not make much and pays for my own stuff and also I'm paying off other tickets. She will not leave me alone. I am constantly receiving letters from her in the mail as well. Do I continue to note her? Also, the guy I got into an accident with had absolutely no damage to his car whatsoever, which the cop that came took pictures of his car to prove that. I did not have insurance at the time because I couldn't afford the down payment for it until pay day and had just gotten the car. My car was not damaged either. But she claimed that "in the state of California when a bumper is hit it is THE LAW to replace it even if their is no damage." Is this correct? Is this really a law? So now I owe 2k, and she will not leave me alone and is threatening to take my license. The woman I spoke to was also Brandi Jones and she is incredibly rude.
