Is it illegal for me to call the court staff or the judge and ask a question about a document that I received? I have questions about this subpoena that I received, and the attorney that issue it doesn't answer my calls so I want to call the court but I'm not sure if that's proper or not?

It's legal to make the call. However, the judge isn't going to talk to you and the court clerk isn't going to give "legal advice." All the clerk is likely to tell you is "do what the subpoena says to do" or "consult an attorney."

Frankly, you'd get a better response if you quote the subpoena here word for word and ask your question.

Also explain what the case is about and how you are related to it.

Some clerks of the court are very helpful and will really direct you in the right way but some are just completely worthless and just tell you call a lawyer. My experience is it varies greatly.
