    Arrest and prosecution

David Jassy was arrested by Los Angeles police on November 23, 2008, after a confrontation between David Jassy and jazz musician John Osnes which led to a fight between the two. Osnes, an avid pedestrian activist who did not own a car, was crossing the street at Selma Avenue and Schrader Boulevard in Los Angeles, when Jassy's car moved into the crosswalk, authorities said. Witnesses told police that Osnes struck the front of Jassy's vehicle with his hands. Jassy allegedly got out, punched Osnes, kicked him in the head when he stooped to recover his glasses, and then ran over him with the vehicle while attempting his escape. Bystanders, including an off-duty Anaheim police officer, witnessed the assault and tried unsuccessfully to detain Jassy, according to authorities.

Osnes was pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital, and Jassy was arrested later that day after the investigators traced the license of his rented vehicle. David Jassy was arrested, and is now charged with one count of murder, along with an additional count of assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in custody on $1 million bail. He faces a possible life-with-parole prison term. The trial began on January 13th, 2010. Jassy's attorney contends he was defending himself, his girlfriend and his SUV from "an angry drunk." The prosecuting attourney says Jassy was the aggressor.
