  • College problem -- I don't feel like I'm getting what I paid for

I have a problem with the community college that I'm attending.

First, I HAVE to be taking at least 12 credit hours to qualify for the GI Bill VRAP program. I'm trying to get a Electricians Certificate.

First: I didn't know/had no way of knowing/didn't know that It would be impossible to get that many credit hours in a semester under that program.

Second: The college recommended that I apply for an associates degree that would allow me to 1: take 12 credit hours and 2: still get the electrical certificate under that program.

My problem is this: I signed up for a physics class (it's a supposed to be a "survey" type class). The instructor (an astronomy instructor) was asked to teach the class only the day before the class started. The class seems to me to be completely disorganized and we don't always get the web portion/notes that we're supposed to have printed off AND the pages of the book that we're supposed to read until only a day or so before the class. I don't feel like I'm getting what I paid for and will have to pay the penalty for it.

I called the department head today and asked to be put in another class. If that class actually goes by the book that they made me buy I'm willing to play catch up and take what I get.

I don't feel like I'm getting what I paid for. I'm not looking for an easy grade. I already have a bachelors degree and am only here for knowledge. However, I don't feel like I'm getting what I paid for.

If I drop or fail the course I'll probably loose my GI Bill money and financial aid. I'm really in a bind here. Can I sue the college?

No, you can attempt to change classes. If you want a job as an electrician, you should apply for an apprenticeship with your local electrical union.
Due to a recent promotion, I should now be referred to as Major Obvious.

I would not be trying to provide information and knowledge if I did not sympathize.

Some days it is just not worth chewing through the restraints to face life.

I wish to inform you that if college had stated anything which is false at the time of your enrolment then you can claim breach of contract. Further you can seek compensation both for your loss of time as well as loss of your financial resources. A college is liable if you can show that they have made false statement and not otherwise. The burden of proof will be on you to prove the clams and allegations made by you. Further your state laws can provide you additional remedy for wrong done to you.

Before you launch off suing anyone, which will not get you the credits or degree you want anyway, work with the college to transfer to the classes you need. Unless you are working full time, 12 credit hours is not that heavy a class load -- IF the school had the classes available.

About the 'disorganized' class, yours is probably not the first complaint the school has had about that instructor. You can get a lot of information from other students, so I would use that method -- be it in the cafeteria, spotting someone coming out of a class you are considering to get some information on a course and the instructor before you sign up.

As long as the school is willing to accommodate you, work with them and between the two of you they will probably be able to fashion a program that suits your needs.

I remember when I took physics in college. After 2 days of the class going no where, I told the instructor I did not feel I was learning anything. He replied that it was a physics class so no one expected anyone too. I then asked how he planned on grading a class where no one learned anything. He said they usually curve the C's to A's and D's to B's. I dropped that afternoon.

I think it really frustrating for sometime, when you are unable to feel secure for your study and future career as you always need to have clear about your fields, you are opting for your future. Which would lead to a successful career.
