Can we trust lawyers in China to hold our funds in escrow on a deal we are negotiating. The firm has 16 lawyers and is supposedly fairly well known.

We usually like to involve firms with a US connection if the amounts are larger. The branch of a US firm in Shanghai, Hong Kong or Beijing for example.

tax clearance certificate is necessary for transfer of us5 lakhs from china to India and asking to pay us$810 for tax clearance certificate and processing fee in email

That is a fraud--you don't need to pay tax clearance certificate costs for any lottery winnings...inform the police.

You better have very good references.
There is tons of fraud about fake so-called fees that fraudsters ask people to pay--it's a very common scam in China.

My advice in such situations: Use a US firm or law firm in China if you MUST have funds in escrow but frankly there are not too many instances where that truly must be done,
