Many people ignore Northern Leasing. If you are in California, for example, what are they going to do? Are they going to hire a CA attorney to enforce a $1500 judgment?
That's what they are supposed to do: take an "exemplified" copy of the judgment to your state and county, convert it to a local judgment ("domesticate") and enforce normally.
That's too expensive for Northern. So they look to see if you opened an account at Citibank or Bank of America or another big bank that has a branch in New York. Legally, your money is not in the New York branch. The NY bank is supposed to tell Northern to pound salt and do it right. But they can't be bothered.
If you ignore the summons and you bank with a bank that has a branch in Nw York, Northern will try to take your money. They usually succeed, because your bank is NOT on your side.
I recently appeared before a judge on one of these motions. She was perturbed that this happened. But for now, you have to get a lawyer in New York who knows how to do these cases without costing $5000+. (I charge much much less than that :-)
